Direction mailer for Rockwell International Aerospace
This is a motivational piece to promote Rockwell at the Paris air show. It
was a give-away to a select few. The theme for the piece "Direction" was
used in an ad campaign but the idea of a compass was chosen by the creative
director. I was given a grainy black and white photo of a 300 plus year
old Ming dynasty compass and from this I created all the pieces including
the compass.
I researched reference for the compass all over the US and found what I
needed at the University of Chicago at Hyde Park. In their oriental library
I found a book illustrating many compasses including the one I needed.
From that I produced a line drawing which a belt buckle manufacturer produced
the final compass.
The piece includes the compass, box, and brochure
Native American Flute Kit
Hal Kacanek a music educator wanted to sell his plastic native American flute
kit in museum stores and the like. He contacted me with his idea and wanted
something more than just a plastic bag. The kit consisted of the flute,
music book, paint, brushes and instructions on how to decorate the flute
like the native Americans did.
I designed a box with motifs from the Lakota tribes using beadwork borders
and simple graphics to generate an interesting look for this piece to help
it compete with other such items that sat on the shelf. The brochure is
also my design as well as the instruction sheet and all fit nicely into
the box for an exciting presentation.
Hamms beer mug
Because I live in MIlwaukee it is no surprise that among my pieces there
are some things related to the many brewers in this area. This particular
piece
features the loveable Hamms bear a prominent feature of their advertising
for many years.
The piece is an insert for a thermo beer mug and was created from a cartoonist
style sheet for the bear and his attendant characters. They carry
him off in true Bacchanal fashion in the "Land of sky blue waters, ba ba
ba boom"
The Cockroach that ate Brooklyn
To promote the advantages of using cci method of cockroach control this
dimensional pop-out ad says that using the competitions product can create
problems of unusual proportions.
This ad was the work of many talented people who created the model cockroach,
Brooklyn brownstone street scene, took the photos, assembled the visuals
and created the die cut. The ad began as a cartoon that I drew. From there
I hired a model maker who made a rather large cockroach out of wood, paper
clips, acetate and nail polish. Joanie also created the model of Brooklyn
out of foam core and paper. The model is a real person. These two pieces
where photographed by Joe Beauchamp using his incredible sense of lighting
to help create the erie effect.
The ad ran and garnered much excitement among the pest control businesses
and soon had them ringing the phone off the wall of the home office.
